A very good example of a USAAF Sector Clock in very good undamaged condition, operating well but stops after about and hour so in need of cleaning. Constructed in Bakelite with a diameter of 10” or 26cms and made by Seth Thomas the movement dated 1943.
The USAAF was operating jointly with the RAF’s 2nd Tactical Air Force, in the Allied Expeditionary Air Force from D Day onwards and they too used the sector method for plotting aircraft movements. The Clock is the same model as used by the U Navy bulkhead clock with a face that has the minute segments of an RAF Sector Clock.
Used for tracking enemy aircraft from information gathered by observers in the field and from mobile radar units’, its appearance is very different from the RAF Clocks, but the same sequence of colour is used (red ,yellow and blue) is used for the five-minute segments of each quarter of an hour.
The Allied Expeditionary Air Force was a mobile force operating from close behind the front line as it moved across Europe. Its HQ’s operated from tents and the clocks were carried in boxes for easy transportation, usually remaining in their boxes when in use. Because it was based on a US Navy Clock, these were moderately waterproof, which was essential tent bound existence in the field in a European winter.
