A very nice and rare British made WW1 other ranks “Maternity” Tunic with all originally applied insignia for the scarce rank of Acting Corporal.
Created specifically for members of that Corps and as such evoking the classic image of the WW1 RFC, this example is in very good service used condition overall. There are two small tear repairs to the lower back but only one or two pin sized moth nips. Constructed in the lovely early/mid war light khaki serge with a ginger hue it is part lined in the desirable off white/cream cotton and flannel combination also indicating mid war manufacture. The large fold over flapped front is closed by four buttons and a hook and eye on the right side with a further two concealed buttons holding the under flap in place.
There are two flapped and buttoned pockets, a pair of shoulder straps and a stand-up collar closed at the neck by three brass hooks. A good pair of Royal Flying Corps shoulder titles are in place with below these Corporal chevrons. To the left cuff there is one Long Service and Good Conduct chevron indicating at least 2 years unblemished service in wartime or 3 years pre war.
The combination of Corporal chevrons worn with Long Service and Good Conduct chevrons is a rare one, this being only permitted when a Leading Aircraftman has the “Acting” rank of Corporal not the substantive rank.
First appearing in 1912 not long after the raising of the Royal Flying Corps, the Tunic was not officially adopted until 1913. Very soon after its appearance this distinctive Tunic was given the nickname “Maternity” as it was thought to resemble clothing worn by expectant mothers. The name stuck and it was universally used ever after.
When the RAF was created in 1918, that service abandoned this style of Tunic and reverted to a standard four pocket design instead.
A quintessential British RFC other ranks garment.
