Perhaps best considered a refurbishment project or donor of valuable parts, this Ist Pattern Luftwaffe Dagger by E & F Hoster is one of a number of items to have recently emerged from a garden shed, all having suffered the same indignities caused by time and environment.
This is the later pattern Dagger with alloy rather than nickel mounts. The sun wheel pommel retains the gilding to the Swastika but has taken a blow at the base resulting in chip fortunately to the reverse side. The leather covering to the grip is very good with minor rubbing but missing the top third of the twisted grip wire.
The crossguard is very good with no issues, the original leather buffer sitting below it.
The blade is excellent, full length with no issues and no damage but with some impacted grease at the ricasso. The Horster trade make remains clear and crisp.
Moving to the scabbard, there is light surface corrosion to the alloy mounts with one area of pitting to the chape. The hanging chain is very good. The body of the scabbard is perhaps the biggest issue. Cracking and loss to the leather covering has allowed the scabbard to rust in a number of places. Not uncommon and I have seen examples where the leather has been successfully recovered but nevertheless a significant point.
