Early WW2 Camouflaged Ground Sheet / Rain Cape

Early WW2 Camouflaged Ground Sheet / Rain Cape

Code: 56605

SOLD

An excellent and rather scarce example of a World War Two British Army Camouflaged Ground Sheet (Sheets Ground), also known as a Rain Cape and constructed in a lightweight rubberised cotton canvas.

A variation on those issued to troops in World War One the camouflaged version saw service with the B.E.F in 1939 -1940 and was short lived, later examples being Khaki in colour. Although undated those that I have seen with dates are marked either 1939 or 1940.

Overall condition is excellent. The material remains soft and pliable without any hard patches. All brass eyelets are in place as are the original brown buttons and hook and eye at the neck.

Carried in the ’37 small pack period images show these rolled as I have shown with a short length protruding beneath the closure flap and held in place by the pack straps.

It would prove difficult to upgrade this example.
