Probably the last of these artefacts from Operation Deadlight is this Kriegsmarime Barometer and data booklet which appears to have been taken from U-328 after its surrender.
The Barometer appears to be in good working condition and measures 75 mm in height with a base plate of 160mm in diameter and dial diameter of about 125mm in diameter.
On the top of the case is an adjustment point which allows you to set the barometric setting to a known value, after which it should be accurate. Of particular importance of course if the crudely scratches number U-328 , one of the Operation Deadlight victims, which appears on the backplate.
To the bottom of the dial is the Kriegsmarine eagle over M above the instrument number 3418/OBS which matches the data Booklet.
The condition is very good, the silver paint original.
The booklet is also in very good condition, the matching number to the instrument clear. On page 3 is the stamp of the Marine Observatory whilst on page 10 the initial calibration appears along with the date of 24 Nov 1944, 1944 being the year U-328 being commissioned.
U-328 was laid down on 15 May 1943 by the Flender Werke yard at Lübeck as yard number 328, launched on 24 June 1944 and commissioned on 19 September under the command of Oberleutnant zur See Peter Lawrence. She served with the 4th U-boat Flotilla for training, from 19 September 1944 to 1 May 1945 and the 11th flotilla 2 – 8 May 1945. The boat surrendered at Bergen in Norway on 9 May 1945. She was transferred to Loch Ryan in Scotland on the 30th for Operation Deadlight and was sunk by aircraft of the Fleet Air Arm on 30 November.
