RAF Mk111a Goggles with ATA History

RAF Mk111a Goggles with ATA History

Amongst the nicest example I’ve seen these RAF Mk111a Goggles have the distinction of being  the earliest pair known being 1933 dated and are also named to Air Transport Auxiliary  First Officer J.A Quaife  who joined the ATA as a maps and signals assistant in October 1942 and no doubt seized ever opportunity to fly, hence the goggles.

Synonymous also with the Battle of Britain period and the RAF, their general appearance is excellent, the frames are without damage but as with every pair I have ever seen the rubber padding inside the vervet sleeves has hardened.

Both vent trumpets and stops are in place and the AM marking on the strap are clear. On the right side the springs and covering are perfect whilst on the left side the upper spring is broken but this is not visible when stretched for display.
