Victorian Volunteer Rifles Officer's Tunic

Victorian Volunteer Rifles Officer's Tunic

Code: 56411

SOLD

A fine example of a Junior Officer Victorian Volunteer Rifles Tunic.

Constructed in a heavy grey wool and heavily adorned with silver braid at the cuffs, shoulder straps and stand collar, the Tunic has 8 generic Volunteer Rifles closure buttons at the front with two at the shoulder straps and two at the pleats either side of the rear vent. There is a small single slash pocket just above the belt line to the right of the front buttons.

On both sides of the stand collar a large hand embroidered rank pip is in place, appropriate to an Ensign junior officer , roughly equivalent to the later 2nd Lt. This predates 1881 after which rank insignia was moved to the shoulder straps. It is clear however that the Tunic remained in use without modification as the left sleeve sports the crossed Enfield rifles of a Marksman above which are two beautifully embroidered silver wire National Rifle Association Finalist Badges, one for  Wimbledon 1883 and one for Bisley 1899.

Overall condition is very good with two moth holes on the left sleeve, one to the back and with some loss to the stitching at the left shoulder seam. The lining has wear.
