A WW2 Roll Of Ships "International Code of Signals Flags" HMS Pelican

Code: 58195

£450.00 Approx $596.03, €529.41, £450

A very large and heavy (17kgs) roll of “International Code of Signals” flags, measuring approximately 165cms x 67cms when unrolled. Dated by hand 1943 and accompanied by a 1942 revision of the 1931 International Code of Signals Volume 1 and a picture postcard dated 1939 of HMS Pelican. We have to assume Pelican to have been the ship that carried these flags during WW2.

Contained in their individual pockets there are approximately 27 signal flags, one set of Burgees, one large White Ensign (perhps shown in the picture postcard) measuring 180cms x 87cms and in very good condition, one Royal Merseyside Yacht Club Pennant measuring 100cms and one Pilot Jack measuring 140cms x 97cms in good used condition.

The triangular signals Pennants appear to measure about 240cms in length whilst the signals Flags measure 140cms x 103cms.

The roll and pockets are in good condition, but the canvas backing is now fragile and rips easily. Although I have not inspected each flag individually condition appears to range from very good to poor. These Flags have seen action in the north Atlantic, Mediterranean and Far East.

HMS Pelican (L86) was an Egret-class sloop, built for the British Royal Navy. She was active during the Second World War and was a successful anti-submarine warfare vessel, being credited with participated in the destruction of four U-boats, U-136, 438, 334 and 448.

The picture postcard of Pelican is included in the sale, the final picture of Pelican at sea was found on the internet where she is flying what may be one of these signals pennants. The picture is not included

A very heavy item.
