An excellent example of a Kriegsmarine enlisted man’s Bordmutze (side cap) in a navy blue wool / rayon mix, completely free from moth or other damage.
The most obvious point of interest is the non magnetic Traditions Badge of U-404. This is a variation and one of several original variations known to exist. Without provenance it is impossible absolutely confirm its authenticity, but I have studied it closely and in my opinion it is original to the Cap.
The insignia is the classic hand applied BeVo type, the eagle in a golden thread on a blue rayon backing. The cockade is hand stitched into place the side flaps held in place by vertical stitching below the eagle.
Inside, the black rayon lining shows only light wear, the name tag Weise applied in the typical manner of the period.
A lovely piece with tangible but unprovenanced U-Boat association
