Following the collapse of Mussolini’s Fascist Italy and the move of German troops in, in an attempt to repel the allied advance, vast stocks of equipment, including camouflage material was captured by the Germans and used to bolster their shortages. The Camouflage material was quickly recognised as suitable for the manufacture of winter Parkas needed for the Eastern Front.
The first pattern was not the success they had hoped for and the second pattern, as I have here, came in in 1944 and proved popular and fit for purpose.
A large full cut it was full length and the water repellent cotton duct was lined with a mix of sheepskin and rabbit fur whilst the last one third of the sleeves were lined with a herringbone rayon material. There is a fur lined hood which can be worn up or folded down. Front closure is by a series of pebbled buttons, the last three in this case replaced by plastic buttons. A wind flap provides double closure.
There are four front flapped pockets, again closed by pebbled buttons.
This example is in very good service used condition and the most striking and important feature is the use of a strip of SS Oak Leaf material to finish of the lower edge of the fur lining. The white area at the back is simply wear to the colour from sitting.
There are one or two minor field repairs where the material has been stitched to close small rips and standard Zeltbahn material has been used for other repairs. The cord for tightening the hood is present but the waist cord is missing.
A very nice and completely unmolested example.
