A fine example of a Weimar Republic Police Bayonet by WEYERSBERG KIRSCHBAUM & CIE SOLINGEN, upgraded for use during the Third Reich Period with the blade cut down to 13" in accordance with orders issued in 1936
The eagle’s head pommel and crossguard are nickel plated, the head with working press stud, doubling as the creature's right eye, and full length T-shaped attachment slot for fitting to the rifle, the spine stamped W 150. Stylised feathers are depicted in relief. The grips are staghorn, held in place with aluminium rivets and with a Third Reich period Police eagle and Swastika added as required by later regulations. The crossguard is formed into a short backswept quillon with flared terminal with a raised oakleaf pattern, the reverse with SB for the Berlin municipal office, the man’s number crossed out, usually following reassignment to a different region.
The nickel plated blade rates as very good with some rust patches along the upper edge. The upper edge also stamped W150 with a conjoined K and skeletal star which I take to be an armourer’s mark. The ricasso shows the maker’s Knight’s Head logo with the makers name on the reverse.
The black leather scabbard is very good with both fittings nickel plated, the upper fitting marked S Kg for Schutzpolizei Konigsberg, and W141.
Finally, the leather frog is in very good condition, dated 1931 no doubt showing the original date of the bayonet’s manufacture and complete with the correct portapee.
