WW1 Royal Flying Corps Leather Coat

A good example of a rare WW1 Royal Flying Corps Leather Flying Coat worn by both Pilots and Observers. Issued from the early part of the war they can be seen in use throughout the war despite the introduction of the new Sidcot Suit.

Constructed in a soft chrome leather it has a large fold over flapped front which is secured by a single row of six buttons positioned from just below the right shoulder down towards the waist. A scalloped flap of similar size folds underneath  from right to left giving double thickness protection.

On the left chest is an open slanted map pocket while a flapped pocket is positioned by the left thigh, the flap closed with two press fasteners. Each cuff is closed by identical press fasteners. The collar can be worn up or laid flat, an arrangement of two wide straps and buttons securing it when worn up. A wide leather belt with claw buckle is positioned at the waist.

Inside the coat is a heavy camel coloured blanket lining with one internal pocket. Both leg securing straps are in place, one with slight damage.

The Coat display very well on a mannequin but it would be true to say the last 100 plus years has taken something of a toll. The brown chromed leather remains soft  although I believe some well matched leather dye or polish may have been applied to some areas in the past. There is some cracking and wear toward the lower edges and wear at the shoulder and underside of the sleeves between the cuffs and elbow. A number of buttons are missing, those that remain appear to be replacements. There is one area of obvious damage to the leather on the inside on the left side where the leather meets the lining.

Seam stitching remains strong with just some loss under the collar.
