Zeiss U Boat 7 x 50 Binoculars

SOLD

Code: 55277

Although let down somewhat cosmetically, these so called  3rd Pattern Zeiss 7 x 50 U Boat Binoculars go a long way to making up for that with excellent optics and a rare red optical coating.

Part of a contract which saw 6000 produced between 1943 – 45 the body has a smooth coating, originally with a sea green painted finish, now rather crudely overpainted in an off white.

The rubber armour on the prism covers and eyecups are in very good condition with no cracks or splits. For some inexplicable reason they appear to have been glued down with a soft Bostik type glue which has allowed the right side to be lifted just enough to see the serial number 55721, blc and 7 x 50. The armour on the objectives is also good with some very light deterioration around the upper edges.

Optically they excellent, clear without any haze and in collimation. The lens coating is red rather than blue and the general thinking among collectors is that this was run as trial by Zeiss. I have only encountered one example in the past.

A good and very usable pair of U Boat Binoculars well worthy of cosmetic restoration.
