Essex Yeomanry Helmet with History

SOLD

Code: 55552

A very nice example of an Essex Yeomanry 1871 pattern helmet, with silvered skull, mounted with brass acanthus leaf decoration. To the front the helmet plate is of brass and white metal above the Essex Yeomanry scroll.

Two rose head bosses support an interlinked leather backed chin chain. The crown is with spike supporting a red plume, the plume being a replacement. The interior is with padded material lining, the lining with wear and damage. The Helmet is otherwise in very good condition.

Attributed to Major A Roddick the helmet is complete with it’s Jappaned tin case with two brass plates, one to Major A Roddick Essex Yeomanry, the other to the helmet maker,  Hawkes & Co. Ltd, 1 Saville Row London W

Major A Roddick  served with the 3rd Cavalry Division of the Essex Yeomanry and was killed in action at Ypres in 1915. He fought in the South African war with Paget’s Horse

The Helmet and case are accompanied by an original cutting from “The Sphere” of June 1915 announcing his death and a number of copy photographs.
